Doodle 4 Google competition for SA youngsters offering R100 000 tech grant prize

Every year, Google gives youngsters around the world the chance to showcase their artistic talents through the Doodle 4 Google competitions hosted in various countries. This year, the competition has come to local shores with the second edition of the South African Doodle 4 Google.

Doodle 4 Google invites learners of certain age groups to draw am image under a given theme and have the winning Doodle displayed on the Google home page for a day. The competition is open to primary and high school learners between the ages of 6 and 17 years. Learners must create their own Doodle under the theme “South Africa of My Dreams”, which celebrates our country’s 20 years of freedom.

“At Google, we believe the most ambitious ideas and untethered creativity of young people can help make the world a better place. Doodle 4 Google is meant to inspire students to think and dream big. We’d love to see Doodles inspired by the youth’s hopes and dreams for their country,” says Google.

Doodles will be separated in four age groups: 6 – 8, 9 – 11, 12 – 14 and 15 – 17 and will be judged by a combination of Google employees and panel of guest judges.

Judges will select 100 semi-finalists across age groups from all the entries. Twenty finalists will then be chosen according to certain criteria and thereafter, the public will be able to vote online for their favourites in each age group. Judges for the Doodle 4 Google include: DJ Fresh, Spud author John van De Ruit, Rugby star Pat Lambie, Graham Jenneker, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Spud actor Sven Ruygrok, founder and CEO of 2oceansvibe Media Seth Rotherham and Ryan Germick.

Winners will be selected in each age group and an overall national winner will be chosen by Google executives at an event to be held in Johannesburg on 29th November 2014.

The overall winner’s Doodle will be featured on the Google home page on 3rd December 2014 and they’ll walk away with a R100 000 technology grant to be used at his or her school.

Schools can submit as many Doodles as they want, but individual submissions are limited to one per learner. School teachers, parents and after school programmes can submit on behalf of learners. Doodles can be uploaded and submitted onto the Doodle 4 Google site or posted to the address below:
