SA man to run 250km Antarctic race to raise R250k for solar energy

Over the years David Barnard has used his passion for running to support another thing that’s close to his heart – raising funds and awareness for specific causes. This time around, Barnard is set to run in the 250 kilometre Last Desert Race across Antarctica to help raise R250 000 for the installation of solar energy in an underprivileged South African community.

Barnard is the vice-president of online technology donation and discount portal TechSoup Global South Africa

“Running in Antarctica, in severe weather conditions with gale-force blizzards and temperatures which can reach -20 degrees C, will be a very unique experience, and one with a real purpose,” Barnard says.

Barnard is dedicating his race to the work of Greenpeace Africa concerning climate change.

“Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, with far-reaching implications for millions of people around the world, including Africa, whose livelihoods are affected by severe weather and related conditions. The need for more global awareness, cooperation and urgent action is therefore critical,” he adds.

Barnard has a crowdfunding campaign on GivenGain where anyone can donate money directly to his fundraising project. So far R4 244 has been raised, with 124 days to go.

The money raised will go towards Greenpeace Africa’s effort to retrofit solar power into an unnamed community and improve the lives of the people who live there.

“Greenpeace Africa is placing heavy emphasis on community engagement in the planning and implementation of the project, and will host workshops on solar and climate change. This will be held with local authorities and community members to ensure that the community is part of the installation and maintenance process,” Barnard says. “In order to maintain its independence from governments, corporations and political parties, Greenpeace only relies on donations from individuals to carry out its work.

“I’m excited about my participation in the Last Desert Race in Antarctica and the challenge of raising R250 000 for Greenpeace Africa and encourage you to make a contribution in this regard.”

You can donate to Barnard’s campaign on GivenGain and follow updates on his progress on Facebook and Twitter.
