Assemble your own selfies into LEGO portraits

While the extremely limited edition Nelson Mandela LEGO mini figurines sold R5 300 at an online auction, what can possibly be cooler than that? Well, how about assembling any photo or image you want in LEGO?

Brick-a-pic is just the company that you would turn to for such a task. All you have to do is send them an image of yourself (of any photo for that matter), and they will send you the LEGO bricks in the appropriate colours so that you can assemble it yourself. End result: you photo made completely out of LEGO.

The company only makes use of official LEGO colours or colours that have been discontinued, so you won’t have to worry about any strange colour arrangements or colours in different shades.

But there is a bit of a catch…

The company need a bit more funding before they can roll out LEGO selfies, and that is why they’ve turned to Kickstarter.

“Given the chance, we will make a tool that allows you to convert your photo, logo, icon or other image into a LEGO brick mosaic kit just like the examples above. Build it and hang it on your wall, or give it as a gift,” it said on the Kickstarter page.

With only 16 days to go, Brick-a-pic has only reached $15 996 out of the required $50 000 they need, but at least they have over 220 backers. As with any Kickstarter project, there are a number of backer options, with $2 buying you a thank you, while $10 will nab you the downloadable plans for your own image.

The most expensive backing option is for $600, of which there are only seven left. “You pick any custom size (square or rectangle) up to 5,000 square pixels and we will make a kit and optionally build it for you before shipment.”

As it explains, LEGO bricks are rather expensive. “We need a lot of them to make all of your rewards. If we secure funding we will purchase at least 87 527 bricks to complete all the kits and ship them to you.”

You can upload a photo of yourself to their demo website, to get a rough idea of what to end result would be.

“This website is just a fun toy that will give you a hint of what can be done. It doesn’t currently translate your photo into real LEGO colors, but it will if you help us reach our fundraising goal on Kickstarter. With enough funding we can make these kits a reality and we’ll send you a kit of real bricks for you to construct!”
