Department of Science and Tech to host National Science Week in August

The Department of Science and Technology in partnership with the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) is hosting the annual National Science Week which aims to engage and excite the South African youth and to encourage them to develop an interest in studying mathematics and science subjects.

The National Science Week launch takes place this Saturday, the 2nd of August at the University of Free State in Bloemfontein with the focus week running from 4th to 9th of August at venues across the country where various science-orientated activities are set to take place.

The theme of this year’s National Science Week is “Today’s science, tomorrow’s world” with the “International Year of Crystallography” running as a sub theme, which commemorates both the centennial of X-ray diffraction as well as the 400th anniversary of Kepler’s observation in 1611 of the symmetrical form of ice crystals.

The discussions during science week will fall under the following topics:

  • South African inventions
  • Women in science
  • Indigenous knowledge
  • Mathematics
  • Robotics
  • Nanotechnology
  • Biotechnology
  • Astronomy and space technologies

Hopefully the renewed focus on science and mathematics will help South Africa to avoid the kinds of embarrassing education crises it has seen in the past.
