No Doom footage for you before 2015

The new Doom won’t be shown to the world at large until at least 2015, so if you were hoping you’d get to see the gameplay footage shown behind closed doors at QuakeCon last week, you’re in for some disappointment.

At least, that’s what CVG is reporting. That particular tidbit emerged after CVG interviewed Pete Hines, Bethesda’s vice president of PR, who said the demo was shown at QuakeCon to reassure id Software’s most avid fans that all is well at the studio, and that they’re working on something they think is really cool.

Despite having over sixteen minutes of in-game footage to show off, the team behind the game said the game is not yet ready for mass consumption. When asked when Doom might be formally unveiled, Hines said 2015, putting paid to hopes that it would see the light of day at the upcoming Gamescom conference happening in August.

Troubled waters

Ever since id’s acquisition by Bethesda Softworks in 2009, there have been rumours of trouble at the studio, including but not limited to reports of Doom 4’s troubled five-year-plus development. And then id’s lead software architect and all-round programming legend John Carmack left the company for Oculus VR last year, and the company seemed like it was on the verge of collapse.

But it’s not, according to Hines, and the showing of Doom footage was intended to reassure fans that id Software is doing okay. And going on the only thing we have – reports by people who were there – it sounds like id Software is doing more than just “okay”.

It’s a reboot

Reasons to get excited include the fact that this new Doom isn’t a sequel to 3, it’s a reboot: gone are the darkened corridors and demons jumping out at you every two seconds; in their place you’ll find old-school action, tons of gore and big-ass weapons as you attempt to repel the forces of Hell as they invade the Mars base central to all of the games.

The most exciting addition? Gory close-up combat moves, and the possibility of having your arms ripped off by a demon who then beats you to death with them. Awesome.
