We have rAge, West Africa has WAGE

Soon, Nigeria will have its very own awesome gaming event. It’s called the West Africa Gaming Expo, or WAGE, and it’s taking place at the Oriental Hotel Lagos in late September.

WAGE will feature a similar format to our own rAge (just without a LAN attached), with in-development and recently-released games on show for attendees to watch and play, educational talks by various gaming industry luminaries about making games and, of course, the opportunity for gamers and local developers to learn a thing or two about the process of making and marketing games.

Other goodies on the list of attractions include “tournaments, Indie games, giveaways, face-painting, food, drinks and loads more”.

Interestingly, there’s also an element of social upliftment to the event. The organisers, Adolani Events, say that they plan to use the expo’s various talks and workshops to tackle social issues like how games can benefit local communities and how women can get more involved with gaming.

They strongly believe that learning by playing educational games – also called e-learning – can have a very positive impact on education in the region, and have invited Kenya-based elearning company, eLimu, to take part in the expo to share its knowledge with locals.

A few South African outfits are apparently on the list of potential exhibitors at WAGE: game studios Thoopid (Snail Boy), Red Dot Lab (Blazin’ Aces) and Gobbo Games (Re-Spawn) have apparently expressed interest in attending, as has local distributor Megarom. Megarom has a fantastic line-up of publishers that include Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell), 2K (Civilization V, Borderlands) and Blizzard (World of Warcraft, Starcraft II) and should they attend, expo visitors can expect to get some hands-on time with some of the biggest games around.

There’s still a chance to get involved! We’ve been informed that there are still spaces available at WAGE for sponsorships, exhibitors and speakers, so if you’re in any way interested in getting known throughout West Africa you can contact Adedoyin Ogundoyin from Adolami Events via email to get the ball rolling.
