Telkom to continue with staff restructuring

Fixed-line and mobile operator Telkom has told journalists that it plans to continue with its controversial staff restructuring plans, which were halted last week while negotiations with unions were underway.

In a short media statement, Telkom said that it has consulted with all the parties involved, and feels that it is the correct way forward.

“After extensive facilitated consultations and deliberations, management and labour have, in the spirit of cooperation, reconciliation and acting in the best interest of all parties, reached consensus that the current restructuring process will proceed. The parties have agreed that the process of placing employees, and VSP/VERP’s for all management, will proceed next week,” the company said.

Labour union Solidarity has in the past claimed that Telkom is using race as a retrenchment criteria, and lodged an urgent application early last week for an interdict in the Labour Court to stay the flawed consultation process.

The court ruled that a facilitator must be appointed to facilitate the consultations regarding the proposed retrenchments.

“We trust that the new consultation process led by a facilitator will take place correctly and transparently. We are delighted that the legal process that we followed together with the public pressure against Telkom’s planned layoffs had the desired effect,” said Johan Kruger, Deputy General Secretary of Solidarity, at the time.
