Original Resident Evil the latest classic getting the “Remastered” treatment

The original Resident Evil is the latest to be given an HD remaster. Kotaku has reported that the game, based on the HD remake for the Gamecube that came out in 2002 will be available for download come early 2015 and will be out for PC and all consoles bar the Wii U.

The “new” game will run at 1080p on PC, Xbox One and PS4, and 720p on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and all versions will feature 5.1 surround sound, far more detailed character models. Gamers will be able to choose between the original 4:3 aspect ratio and the more modern 16:9; playing in widescreen will provide players with a scroll function as some on-screen elements will be cut off by the widescreen aspect ratio.

Even better than news of the game’s existence is the announcement that it will feature enhanced controls – players can stick with the original control scheme that had characters moving forward relative to their onscreen positions, or change to a modern scheme that moves them in the direction the analogue stick is pushed. As much as I loved the original, those awkward controls that shifted according to the camera position killed Chris and Jill far more often than it saved them.

Everything else from story to dialogue to the environments, however, will be identical to the original game, just better-looking. That’s great news for fans who fondly remember having the daylights scared out of them back in ’96, when the game first came out for the original PlayStation.

Famitsu.com, the Japanese site where the story originated, has a bunch of pics showing off the new game which I’d highly recommend checking out.

This new remastered version is out in “early 2015” and will only be available as a download, so don’t expect to see it in stores.

What other franchises would you guys and gals like to see remastered, or should developers focus more on creating new IPs and leave our old (presumably fond) memories alone?
