King’s Quest maker comeback teased

Fans of old Sierra games are holding their breath in the wake of a simple teaser trailer that hit the web two days ago showing a lone hiker making his way to the mountain that Sierra’s logo was based on. It finishes off with an updated version of the company’s logo and a single word – “Sierra”, a strong suggestion that the brand is on the verge of being resurrected.

The video is hosted on the Sierra Games YouTube channel, with the magical words “More to be revealed at Gamescom 2014” hinting of more to come at the impending games conference happening in Germany next week.

While the history of Sierra in its various incarnations is a long, involved one, all you really need to know is that under the Sierra banner, many classic old-school adventure games were made including King’s Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest and others, with more modern classics like Half Life, Homeworld and Counter-strike being published by the company towards the end of its existence.

With many of gaming’s earliest successes under its belt (King’s Quest rocked everyone’s faces off in the early 80s), and a large library of memorable titles that came later, it’s a brand that occupies a soft spot in the hearts of many gamers the world over, this one included.

But after bouncing between various parent companies and being “re-organised” several times, a process that ultimately tore what was left of it to pieces, the Sierra brand was finally laid to rest in 2008, and has remained the property of Activision-Blizzard ever since.

Now, after a six-year hiatus, the Sierra brand may be about to stage the greatest comeback in gaming history, certainly from the viewpoint of anyone who grew up playing its early games. More on this as we get it.
