Ryse: Son of Rome coming to PC

2014 is turning out to be the year of the port: the latest game to be making its way to another platform is the Xbox One exclusive Ryse: Son of Rome, which PC Gamer says is coming to PC later this year (they mention “fall”, so between September and December). Gamers will get the base game including all of the DLC released to date as well as the extras that came with the game’s special edition.

This is the second Xbox One exclusive to make the jump to PC after Dead Rising 3, which has been available for pre-order on Steam and various other online distribution channels for a while now.

Ryse is a melee fighting game from the studio behind the Crysis franchise, CryTek, and while it wasn’t particularly well-received on the basis that its combat system was too simplistic and repetitive, it did at least look quite pretty. It’s also one of the only games to use Roman culture as a theme, something I feel is sorely lacking given the Romans’ propensity for world domination, violence and orgies.

Porting it to PC makes sense for Microsoft and CryTek alike; Microsoft gets to give something cool to PC gamers and CryTek gets to squeeze some cash from an existing game that requires very little effort to get onto PC. The Xbox One is, after all, nothing but PC parts wrapped in a fancy exterior with a customised operating system.

CryTek should be particularly happy about it because the company is in a bit of financial poo trouble at the moment, and needs maximum cash for minimum effort, something porting the game has the potential to give them.

According to PC Gamer, the PC version will come with 4K support baked in, something that will allow gamers with monstrously powerful gaming rigs and expensive 4K monitors to show off what their babies can do. 4K is, after all, four times the resolution of 1080p, and requires hardware that can pump out four times as many pixels as a 1080p gaming PC in order to maintain a playable frame rate.

PC gamers love that sort of thing, and with a bit of luck Ryse for PC will become this generation’s Crysis, CryTek’s first game that pushed the pixel-punting performance of PCs to their absolute limits when it came out back in 2007.
