This is Microsoft’s selfie-centric smartphone – the Lumia 730

Rumours of a selfie-centric smartphone from Microsoft have been doing the rounds for a while, and it seems that its latest project got itself caught on camera.

Selfies have been the focus for a number of smartphone makers, with Sony developing a better camera sensor for that exact purpose. Even Huawei came up with the term “groufie”, a group selfie for their new P7 phone.

What is thought to be the Lumia 730, and code-named  ‘Superman’, the smartphone looks practically identical to the Lumia 720 but it has the all-important selfie camera on the front end. And according to media reports the phone will pack a 5 megapixel camera and will have a 4.7-inch display.

From the images obtained by WPCentral, it is clear there is a firmware update inbound as well, which more than likely will be timed with the release of Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 or Update 2 – scheduled for some time in November.

“The name of this firmware is Debian Red, which is the actual name of a colour, though more often associated with the Linux Distro. However, Debian Red is very likely the internal codename, similar to how Lumia Black was originally called ‘Bittersweet Shimmer’ and Lumia Cyan was ‘Cherry Blossom Pink’,” wrote WPCentral.

They also noted that the firmware names do follow an alphabetical system with A for Amber, Black, Cyan and now D for Debian Red.
