The metal Samsung Galaxy Alpha is coming to South Africa

Time and again one of the biggest criticisms of Samsung’s flagship smartphones has been that they have always used plastic instead of metal like Apple’s iPhone and HTC’s One smartphones. Simply put, plastic has lowered Samsung’s perceived quality. All that is set to change when the metal clad Samsung Galaxy Alpha launches in the next few months. The good news is that it has already been confirmed to be coming to South African shores from the country’s largest mobile operator, Vodacom. While the phone has not been officially launched, it made an appearance at a yachting event in Russia over the weekend – the Galaxy Alpha was paraded around to attendees and featured heavily in the promotional material all around the marina and before the pictures could be removed from the interwebs. GSMArena managed to get a hold of some of them including a set of images that shows off the phone in its entirety.

While the Galaxy Alpha will address the issues surrounding build quality, the smartphone certainly won’t be winning a showdowns in the specs department any time soon. With a 4.7 inch display that runs at just 720p resolution, it’s a far cry from the 1080p and even 2k displays we’re used to seeing in premium smartphones in the last 18 months. It will run on a Samsung made eight core Exynos 5 processor which would normally entail the absence of an LTE radio however the faster network connection is confirmed in the slide to be available in the Galaxy Alpha. Samsung Galaxy Alpha Specs Along with the processor will be 2GB of RAM powering the latest version of Android 4.4.4 as well as 32GB of non-expandable storage which would indicate that the back cover and the battery will more than likely be non-removable. Speaking of the battery, if the slide is correct then the Samsung Galaxy Alpha will have a paltry 1 850mAh battery, a far cry from the 2 800mAh user-replaceable one in the Galaxy S5. It will feature the same heart rate sensor and fingerprint reader as the Galaxy S5 does and will have a 12 megapixel rear camera when it arrives later this year.
