The Department of Science and Technology will be hosting the annual South African Women in Science Awards this Friday.
The South African Women in Science Awards are held every August to coincide with the celebration of Women’s Month and are aimed at rewarding women scientists and researchers, and encouraging younger women to follow in their footsteps.
The awards will take place on 15th August at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton starting at 18:00, the theme for this year’s edition is “Twenty years of democracy and freedom: The changing landscape of women’s participation in science and technology education, training and employment”.
Awards, fellowships and scholarships will be given in the following categories:
- Awards for distinguished women researchers physical and engineering sciences
- Social sciences and humanities
- Awards for distinguished young women physical and engineering sciences social sciences and humanities
- Fellowships Master’s students (5 fellowships, 2 of which are for studies in indigenous knowledge systems) doctoral students (5 fellowships, 2 of which are for studies in indigenous knowledge systems)
- Tata Africa Scholarships for Women in science, engineering and technology Master’s students (X3), doctoral students (X3)
Professor Glenda Gray, President of the Medical Research Council and National Research Foundation A-rated researcher, will deliver the keynote address. Professor Gray trained as a medical doctor and paediatrician at Wits co-founded and led the internationally renowned Perinatal HIV Research Unit, based at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.
