Tom Hanks wants to turn your iPad into a typewriter

Forget silent touchscreens and haptic feedback, nothing says “I am writing” like the sound of a mechanical arm thumping paper. So let actor Tom Hanks turn your iPad into a virtual Underwood by installing his new app.

Apparently, Hanks has been rather vocal in the past on the subject of traditional typewriters versus computers for certain documents. – like thank-you notes and personal letters. And to convey the feeling of the clack-clack-ping from a typewriter, he has released an iPad app to do just that.

Called Hanx Writer and developed by Hitcents.com, the iPad app transforms the usual iPad keyboard into a typewriter, complete with all the sounds that go with it.

“What’s pleasing to my sensibilities is when you have the report of the key being struck; it allows for clear thinking. I suppose some people who get the app may just be looking for a different sound, but really, it’s for people searching for a more personalized experience when writing on an iPad,” he told USA Today.

The best part about the app, besides being inspired by Hanks, is that it is completely free. Other apps that do the same thing usually cost around $2. But Hanks can see the funny side in having a really loud typewriter sound – “There’s also the opportunity here to take your iPad to a coffee house and be really obnoxious with all the clickety-clacking.”

The one-time standup comedian couldn’t resist a joke about the NSA, Germany and going back to the old days of using typewriters for government documents – and made fun of hipsters in the process.

“Well, I think Germany just said their government was all going back to typewriters, so they can’t be spied on by us. But really, Hanx Writer is just my little gift to the future Luddite hipsters of the world.”

The app can be downloaded here.
