Virtual reality surgery with GoPro and Oculus Rift

The gaming community is certainly excited about the impending arrival of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, but they’re not the only ones it seems.

Rémi Rousseau (a virtual reality expert) teamed up with French surgeon Dr Thomas Gregory to film a hip replacement surgery that he was performing in 3D using a pair of GoPro cameras, and turn it into a virtual reality surgery using an Oculus Rift VR headset to play it back.

The surgery was filmed for a project commissioned by Dr Gregory’s Moveo Foundation, which is trying to find ways of improving the technology being used in modern orthopaedic surgery.

The video is being touted as the best way for trainee surgeons to step into the shoes of a surgeon as he performs a procedure potentially paving the way for simulation style training sessions that could potentially help surgeons to be better prepared in the future.

The full surgery, as well as short project excerpts, are available online for both development kit versions of the Oculus Rift at the Moveo Fondation website.

Bear in mind that the images are rather graphic considering that it was a live surgery – but for those of us without the headset you can still see the video about the project below:
