Original Galaxy Gear gets Tizen update in SA

Tizen has been touted by Samsung as their next-generation operating system in favour of Google’s Android, and now the Korean tech giant has made the new operating system available for its first version of its Galaxy Gear in South Africa.

“Samsung is committed to achieving continuity among current Gear devices by providing more benefits to the end user. This OS replacement for the Gear 1 offers a richer user experience with improvements that allow for greater flexibility, to complement the consumer’s lifestyle,” explained Craige Fleischer, director of mobile communications at Samsung Electronics SA in a press statement.

The first Galaxy Gear launched last year alongside the Note 3, but was quickly replaced by the Galaxy Gear 2 a mere six months later.

“At Samsung, we remain dedicated to offer mobile solutions that that make everyday life easier and more convenient. The availability of the Tizen OS demonstrates this commitment to further enhance our products to offer our consumers the most effortless user experience that enrich their lives,” Fleischer continued.

If you are making use of a first generation Galaxy Gear, you should be able to get the update by simply going to the Gear Manager app and updating from there.

“Along with the benefits to battery life and performance that Samsung touted for the Gear 2, the original Galaxy Gear will also get the ability to monitor sleep patterns using Sleep mode in S Health as well as improved workout monitoring in Exercise mode (the Galaxy Gear was previously only able to track footsteps using the built-in Pedometer). Users will also be able to use the on board storage of the Galaxy Gear to store music and play it back without needing a connected smartphone, just like the Gear 2,” htxt.africa’s Dave Greenway explains.
