SA’s Sharlto Copley to star in Sony-produced TV show for PS4

Sharlto Copley, the South African actor best-known for his roles in Neil Blomkamp’s District 9 and Elysium movies (as well as his brilliant depiction of crazy Murdoch in 2010’s The A-Team movie) has been cast in his first big TV role.

He will star in a show called Powers, a drama series about a world in which superpowers exist (think comic books, not the US of A and its massive nuke stash).  He will play Christian Walker, a homicide detective who used to have his own powers, but which were taken away in some sort of conflict with one of the series’ antagonists.

Of the series, Slashfilm writes “Based on the comic book by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, Powers depicts a world in which superpowers are real, but create as many problems as they solve. More specifically, it focuses on two homicide detectives who specialize (sic) in cases involving superpowers.”

Interesting premise aside, it’s the fact that Powers is concrete proof of Sony’s intentions to do more with the PS4 than simply have it play games that has us intrigued, as it’s an original TV series being developed specifically for release on the PS4. That’s a rather significant about-face after punting the PS4 as a gaming machine so hard up to this point and scoffing at Microsoft’s ambitions to make the Xbox One the centrepiece of the modern living room.

Microsoft continues with its ambitions, albeit in a watered-down fashion as it mulls the sale of its Xbox Entertainment Division to Warner Bros.

The Verge reports that Powers will be made available via the PlayStation Network and play through consoles in much the same way as overseas folks enjoy Netflix and Hulu on their PS3s and Xbox 360s, presumably through an as-yet-unreleased app.

Unfortunately for South Africans, we’re not going to have the chance to watch Powers on our PS4s, as The Verge says the rights to the show will be sold to broadcasters internationally, and only be available from the PlayStation Network if you live in the USA.

IMDB says Powers will be out sometime in the remainder of 2014.
