The HTC One (M8) for Windows is official

It’s been one of the worst kept secrets in the smartphone world of late, but the secret is officially out. The HTC One (M8) for Windows is now officially official.

The phone runs on identical hardware to the Android powered HTC One that it’s based on and goes so far as having identical dimensions including thickness and even weight. In fact the only change that you’ll notice from the original HTC One is that the HTC One (M8) for Windows runs, well, Windows (Phone that is).

As we said earlier the HTC One (M8) for Windows runs on the same hardware as its Android predecessor, that means a quad core 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor along with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage which is expandable by up to 128GB using a microSD card. The same beautiful full HD Super LCD3 display is also there nestled in the best smartphone body in the business with the all aluminium frame construction available in only the one colour – gun-metal grey – instead of the three.

HTC has used some software magic to get the Duo Camera form the Android version of its smartphone to place nicely with the Windows Phone OS although it is still the same, rather disappointing, 4 megapixel Ultrapixel camera unit as before.

Speaking of software the phone will run on the latest version of Windows Phone 8.1 which packs the Cortana digital assistant as well as the all-important notification centre into the OS. From HTC’s side, the BlinkFeed news and social media aggregator that would normally reside to the left of the One M8’s homescreen has been converted into a Windows Phone app replete with its own Live Tile. Strangely enough the square, tiled format of the BlinkFeed posts seems to fit in with the Windows Phone aesthetic more than it ever did on Android.

While the initial version of the HTC One (M8) for Windows is for Verizon in the US, which is incompatible with South African networks, the other major carrier AT&T has said that it will be getting the phone shortly and that means that we could very well be seeing it in South Africa before too long.
