Play Borderlands 2 for free this weekend

You’ll be able to grab and play Borderlands 2 on Steam this weekend for no cash down as it’s being punted on the platform’s Free Weekend promotion.

On the slim chance that you don’t already own the game, you’ll also be able to buy the core game for $4.99 (R53.45) and the Game of the Year edition that includes all of the DLC for $9.99 (R107 or so) in case the shooting and looting bug grabs hold as you play.

Gearbox Software is likely using the promotion to whet gamers’ appetites for their upcoming pre-sequel to the game, called – drum roll – Borderlands: The Pre-sequel that is coming out on the 17th of October for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Mac. Pre-orders for the game have just gone live so you can totally pre-purchase should the free weekend convince you of its worth.

The pre-sequel is going to offer more of the shoot-and-loot fun of the first two Borderlands games, except this time it will be set on a moonbase on Hyperion, complete with low-gravity shenanigans, new abilities, new weapons and new moves.

Gearbox put out a pretty funny trailer for the game showing off the new features the pre-sequel is bringing to the already-extensive arsenal of Borderlands 2’s awesomeness, and of course we’ve kindly embedded it below for your viewing pleasure.
