Robin Williams to be immortalised in World of Warcraft

We were all saddened at news of Robin Williams’ passing last week. Gamers were especially upset as Williams was a known fan of franchises like Portal, The Legend of Zelda and Blizzard’s World of Warcraft; he liked games so much that they are the reason he named his daughter Zelda.

Shortly after the news surfaced, many World of Warcraft players petitioned Blizzard to pay tribute to Williams somehow in the game; the official response via Twitter was that they were “…taking care of it”, and now news has surfaced via Engadget that the tribute will take the form of not one, but three new NPCs (non-player characters) that will be added to the game in the upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion.

One of them appears to be based on one of Williams’ most famous roles, that of the blue genie from Disney’s Aladdin animated movie; the other two are apparently male and female humans. The data was discovered by a site called Wowhead that goes through World of Warcraft data to find new and interesting tidbits about upcoming additions to the game.

It’s very touching that this sort of thing isn’t only limited to celebrities. Other companies have done it for fans: terminally-ill Borderlands superfan Michael Mamaril was immortalised in Borderlands 2 by Gearbox Software and a 24-year old Total War fan made it into Total War: Rome 2 shortly before he died, so clearly game developers really do care.

To see the Robin Williams tribute, you’ll need to log into Warlords of Draenor once it launches on November 13.
