Over the last couple of years photography has become more accessible to the masses, in part thanks to the great strides being made as more powerful cameras are being baked into smartphones. The king of photo taking and sharing, Instagram, has just added another weapon in their arsenal – time lapse videography.
Time lapse videography is the art of taking video footage that is normally fairly long, and speeding it up to be viewed within a couple of second or minutes, which can make things look really cool. And Instagram wants you to do just that with their new Hyperlapse from Instagram app.
Hyperlapse from Instagram is a completely separate app from the normal Instagram application, and is available in the Apple store right now. Unfortunately Android users will have to wait a little bit longer, as the Google version isn’t quite ready for download yet.
“Traditionally, time lapse videos depend on holding your phone or camera still while you film. Hyperlapse from Instagram features built-in stabilization technology that lets you create moving, handheld time lapses that result in a cinematic look, quality and feel—a feat that has previously only been possible with expensive equipment,” Instagram said in a blog post.
The beauty about the Hyperlapse from Instagram app is that you don’t need to create an Instagram account or sign in, as you simply download the app, launch it to the camera, do your thing and save it to the camera roll – and that is it. You will be able to record videos of up to 10 minutes in length with an iPhone 4 and up to 45 mintues with an iPhone 5, and then edit them to set the desired playback speed. Created videos can then be shared on Instagram and various social networks.
“From documenting your whole commute in seconds or the preparation of your dinner from start to finish to capturing an entire sunset as it unfolds, we’re thrilled about the creative possibilities Hyperlapse unlocks. We can’t wait to see what you’ll create,” Instagram explained.
