‘Robo Brain’ is here, prepare for the robot apocalypse

Researchers at Cornell, Stanford, Brown and UCLA may have just signalled the beginning of the end of mankind’s existence on earth with their latest creation: Robo Brain, a giant repository of internet-sourced information that will be available to robots to better understand the humans that they serve.

If that last sentence immediately triggered a flash of panic centred around the human-extinguishing artificial intelligence known as Skynet in the Terminator franchise of movies, well then you’re not alone because that’s the exact thought process that rippled through the htxt.africa offices.

“Our laptops and cell phones have access to all the information we want,” explained Ashutosh Saxena, assistant professor of computer science at Cornell.”If a robot encounters a situation it hasn’t seen before it can query Robo Brain in the cloud.”

Experimental robots have in the past been trained to perform certain tasks by using video simulations to effectively ‘learn’ how that task is performed. The idea behind the Robo Brain project is to make that kind of knowledge available to untrained robots by allowing them to search through the robot-friendly repository for the relevant information.

According to a post by Cornell, the robots “will process images to pick out the objects in them, and by connecting images and video with text, it will learn to recognize objects and how they are used, along with human language and behaviour.”

It’s this kind of learning ability that could see robots become the helpful servants that we’ve always envisioned them to be, although if Robo Brain starts learning things from 4Chan then it may be only days until it becomes forever corrupted.

If you’re as intrigued – or frankly as frightened as we are – about Robo Brain, then you can visit its website to see the latest things it has learned as well as some more information about the project as a whole.
