New Command & Conquer-like RTS coming soon, but not from EA

Do you love Command & Conquer but hate that EA’s last two attempts at making a new game have failed dismally at capturing the old C&C magic? Then you’ll be happy to know that Eugen Systems, the studio behind 2005’s Act of War (a C&C clone done extremely well), is making a sequel called Act of Aggression.

Kotaku’s Luke Plunkett says he’s “cautiously optimistic” about the new game going on Act of War’s traditional RTS design, and I concur, having thoroughly enjoyed its unabashed imitation of everything that made C&C great back in the day, including cheesy cutscenes.

Eugen’s official press release says they want to “bring about a return to the ’90s Golden Era of real-time strategy games”, which makes my old heart glad as that seems to imply everything I love about C&C games will be present in this new game – base-building, resource-collection and unit management. Good stuff.

Here’s the teaser trailer they put out:

If you recall, 2010’s C&C 4 was abysmal thanks to the scrapping of  an overhaul of the game’s core mechanics of base-building and tactical ass-kicking in favour of a node-capturing, a class-based fighting system with RPG elements that just didn’t sit well with fans. It was so bad its Metacritic user score is currently sitting on just 2.1 out of 10.

EA’s next attempt at something C&C-related was the ill-fated (and plainly-titled) Command & Conquer, a free-to-play travesty that didn’t survive its alpha phase due to unfavourable fan feedback. According to Incgamers.com, EA plans to continue with the franchise but hasn’t announced anything formally yet.

So in the meantime, if it’s the classic base-building, resource-gathering and unit-management of the older games you’re looking for, Eugen’s Act of Aggression will tide you over until a new, properly-made C&C comes out. There’s no word yet of a release date, though, but more info is likely forthcoming from Gamescom this week.
