A new website that helps place women around the world in tech jobs

“We need more women in tech.” You’ve probably heard that being said more times than you can count, but how many companies are actually doing something tangible towards solving the issue?

Katharine Zaleski and Milena Berry, two women from the US, have designed a new job seeking site called Power to Fly that places women across the world in tech jobs. Women can work between 20 to 40 hours a week from wherever they are without having to relocate, as long as they have a computer and reliable internet connection.

Zaleski and Milena created Power to Fly by drawing from their experiences as women in media and technology who also just happened to be new moms battling with balancing work life and motherhood.

“You can’t expect a woman with 10 years experience and a family to uproot and move to your campus in Silicon Valley,” Zaleski told Inquirer. “That is great if you are 22, but terrible if you have small children who need to be picked up from school.”

Power to Fly mainly focuses on tech jobs such as web designing, backend developing and mobile but has grown to feature other industry jobs as well. Women from 147 countries have registered on the site and a number of women from Egypt, India, Jordan and Russia, among other countries, have been placed in jobs advertised by companies such as BuzzFeed and the Washington Post.

To get started on Power to Fly, you have to set up a profile in the same way you would on LinkedIn, except it’s less formal. You will start off with a two to four-week paid trial to make sure your competent enough for the job and once you’re approved, employers can then hire you.

“We want to change the nature of work overall for women, especially now that all the technology is there to allow people to work — productively— from anywhere,” Zaleski added.
