Grab your .joburg or .capetown now or face losing it

ICANN in 2012 announced plans to create the .joburg, .capetown and .durban domains, and after some time in negotiations and planning, they finally launched the gTDLs in July this year.

With the sunrise period being three months from the start and landrush ending on 3rd November, those wishing to register their own .joburg domains have to do so before 4th November – when the general availability and claims period starts.

“Any organisation or individual with a particular affinity for one of South Africa’s three best-known cities can apply now to claim their own piece of one of these valuable brands. It is about more than pride, however – associating oneself with a particular city through one of these domains allows customers to know more about you and positions your business far more clearly,” said Wayne Diamond, managing director of Domains.co.za, in a media interview.

In essence, that means that you have to apply for one of those domain names as quickly as possible, or you might lose out on owning the domain that you want. It’s also important for people who own South African trademarks to register their interest before someone else reaps it up. Once the initial phases are complete, any of the domains become available to the public – which could create havoc with those who left it too late.

“Sunrise applications are reserved for trade mark holders who have validated their trademarks with the Trade Mark Clearinghouse (TMCH) or Mark Validation System (“MVS), and these applications will have priority over land rush applications. African trade marks will also have priority over international trade marks,” explained Mondaq.

For more information on how to register you domain, head on over the ZA Central Registry website here, as it administers the ICANN registration in South Africa.
