Have your say on the availability of mobile broadband

South Africa’s rural communities still have a huge gap when it comes to access to mobile broadband, and the country’s Draft International Mobile Telephony (IMT) Roadmap has been created to make that possible. But the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) wants the public to come forward with comments and suggestions.

Draft International Mobile Telephony (IMT) Roadmap has been set in place to provide universal availability of broadband services, especially in rural areas, to create better competition in the market, and to encourage investment into the sector.

“The growing demand for mobile broadband in South Africa indicates a need for more mobile broadband bandwidth capacity in general. It is generally known that many rural areas do not have access to mobile bandwidth indicating a need for a more universal mobile broadband coverage, a need best served by deploying lower frequencies that propagate a wider market,” ICASA said in a press statement.

ICASA added that as part of the SA Connect (Broadband Policy) objectives of ‘broadband for all’, the deployment of IMT bands will play a huge role in mobile broadband. The key document in the Draft International Mobile Telephony (IMT) Roadmap that ICASA wants comment on is the deployment of 700 MHz and 800 MHz digital dividend bands, which will provide universal access.

“The consultation document aims to share the findings and draft proposals of the Authority with regards to the roadmap for radio frequency spectrum for IMT and builds on the Frequency Migration Plan published in April 2013.

All interested stakeholders are requested to make their submissions by no later than close of business on 07 October 2014 and may refer their enquiries via email to Richard Makgotlho on rmakgotlho@icasa.org.za.
