Desmond Tutu and 5 of the best South African #IceBucketChallenge videos

It’s the charity meme that keeps on going: after raising nearly $100m (R1bn) for the Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) association in August (around 50 times more than the same body raised last year, Ice Bucket Challenge fever has hit South Africa. There’s an increasing number of locals who are taking part in a bid to raise funds for the  South African Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Here’s five of the best SA Ice Bucket Challenges to watch.

Joost van der Westhuizen

South African awareness of the indiscriminate way ALS attacks was raised in 2011 when former Springbok captain Joost van der Westhuizen was diagnosed with the disease. He took part in the current Ice Bucket Challenge with the help of a few friends. Van der Westhuizen then nominated the whole Springboks and Australian rugby teams to take the challenge.

The South African Springboks team

After accepting the nomination from Joost Van der Westhuizen, the Springboks and their coach Heyneke Meyer, gathered together to take the challenge together, so far their video is one of the most popular South African versions.

Katlego Maboe

Expresso presenter Katlego Maboe was one of the first South Africans to  join the Ice Bucket Challenge. The cause is close to his heart because his own sister suffers from the disease. He nominated DJ Poppy Ntshongwana, model Maps Maponyane and minister of Sports and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula (who is yet to accept the challenge).

Desmond Tutu

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu or “The Arch” as he is affectionately known, has always been a jolly character who isn’t afraid to show his goofier side at times. He recently posted this video of him taking part and nominated his close friends Richard Branson and Peter Gabriel.

Gareth Cliff

Radio presenter Gareth Cliff took the challenge in front of the Cliff Central Studios, pouring a bucket of water over his own head.
