Zapiro, Zackie Achmat, Henrietta Rose-Innes to read at Snowden-athon in Cape Town

Capetonians, show your support for whistleblowing hero Edward Snowden – he behind the wide-ranging NSA leaks which have opened our eyes to state surveillance around the road – and get to meet some local heroes too.

Nine activists and academics will be at the AVA Gallery on Church Street on Monday evening, where they’ll be taking part in a global celebration of Snowden’s work and showing their support for “liberty and recognition”.

The main event is taking place at the International Literature Festival in Berlin, but other cities, like Cape Town, are hosting satellite events across the globe.

At the event, which is being coordinated by Right2Know, speakers will read excerpts from interviews with Snowden and his manifesto. The best known name next Monday is cartoonist Zapiro, but he’ll joined by HIV/AIDS activist Zackie Achmat, Njabulo Ndebele of the University of Johannesburg, author Henrietta Rose-Innes, satirist Masello Motana, Creative Commons lead (and friend of htxt.africa) Kelsey Weins, Artscape director Mandla Mbothwe, Vinayal Bhardwaj of Right2Know and Christi can der Westhuizen.
