Social networking site Facebook has for large portions of the globe become the go-to way of communicating with friends and family, and Africa (with its population of 1.1 billion people) is no different.

It’s because of Facebook’s worldwide popularity that to site has hit a massive milestone on the continent, as it announced that there are now 100 million active Facebook users in Africa.

“People in high-growth countries want to be connected to the world around them. In countries such as South Africa, Nigeria, Turkey, and elsewhere, mobile devices are increasingly the way people find new information, and share their new experiences in the world.  We also know that people will experience Facebook in unique ways across the world, especially in high-growth regions like Africa,” said Nicola Mendelsohn, EMEA VP at Facebook, in a press statement.

Through a number of initiatives Facebook has managed to scoop up more users. It recently revealed that it will be serving mobile ads to users based on their mobile connections, have redesigned the Facebook app to work faster on African networks, and a new ‘click to missed call’ feature for certain countries. But it hopes that it will be able to connect more people to Facebook, and go beyond the 100 million user milestone.

“We know we have lot of work ahead of us, but we have a great team in place focusing on this effort. We are partnering with clients and agencies to test these mobile-first solutions and work together to deliver rich brand messages at lower data costs through solutions such as bandwidth targeting or new products,” Mendelsohn added.
