Today is Destiny Day

The ninth of September – and thus the official release of Destiny for all and sundry – is finally here! Prepare to lose a lot of sleep as you join millions of other gamers the world over in Bungie’s brand-new sci-fi fantasy world full of shooty, looty goodness. If you’re reading this at home because you took the day off to play, good on you sir/madam.

Attack of the Fan Boy says the servers went live yesterday so there is no mythical time to wait for before trying to play. If you own the game and it’s in your hands already, stop reading this and go and play.

You probably know this already, but here’s a reminder of what you will need to play Destiny today: an Xbox 360/PlayStation 3/PlayStation 4, a copy of the game, a working internet connection and a paid-up subscription to Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus.

Once all that is in place, you’ll be able to join the massive number of people who pre-ordered the game in Bungie’s persistent online world. Since the Destiny beta was played by more than 4.6 million people without the servers falling over a while back, I’m actually quite confident we won’t have another SimCity disaster on our hands. But don’t quote me on that – at this point anything could still happen.

Just how many people pre-ordered the game? Activision isn’t talking specific numbers, but they did say in a press release yesterday that Destiny is “the most pre-ordered new IP in history”. That’s in all of history, mind, not just the history of Activision, and presumably Activision has the facts and figured to back that up, else their lawyers wouldn’t have okayed the release.

We’ll be jumping into the fray just as soon as all of this pesky work stuff is out of the way.
