You can now use black emojis on Mxit

Earlier this year, a Mauritian company called Oju Africa launched the first set of black emojis after debate was raised over why there aren’t any black emojis available to represent people of colour.

Now, local instant messaging service Mxit, has added the Oju emoji collection to its app, making them widely accessible to more than five million users. Oju means “faces” in the Nigerian Yoruba language.

“We are very excited to be the first mobile social network to bring Oju Africa to our users. As a proudly African brand, we support and celebrate the diverse culture of our users and constantly explore ways in which we can make their chat experience more meaningful,” said  Ben-Carl Havemann, marketing and communications manager at Mxit.

“Our mission as a lifestyle brand is to work with strong local and global partners to enhance their current offerings,”Alpesh Patel, CEO Oju Africa and Group CEO of Mi-Group International Ltd, said. “We are very proud to be associated with Mxit for our launch into Africa and I am sure the Oju emoticons will be a welcome addition to their current content.”

You can access the Oju emoji collection on Mxit by downloading the Oju app.
