More mobile phone robbery suspects arrested

Gauteng has been the target of technology store robberies for the last couple of weeks, but hopefully that will be coming to an end, as the police have announced that they have made several arrests.

As many as ten shops have been targeted over two months, with the latest one happening last week at The Glen shopping centre. The Glen, Centurion and Cresta’s iStores were all robbed in the space of two weeks.

“We arrested three foreign nationals in Tembisa this afternoon (Friday). We are continuing the investigation,” captain Paul Ramaloko said in a media statement.

The situation has become so serious that the police is offering a reward of up to R200 000 for information that leads to the arrest of those who have been responsible – and it has been fruitful. In addition to the three arrests on Friday, five suspected robbers have been previously been arrested in Brixton and Doornfontein on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba confirmed that the capital province has been the hardest hit. “Gauteng is the worst affected province,” he said on Tuesday. He added that since the 13th of August, there has been 11 robberies involving technology stores, while there has been isolated incidents in other provinces.

“[For] 95 percent of robberies so far, cellphones are the target. Cash is minimal, [but] in two incidents cash was [taken]. Both incidents occurred in Soweto: one at Maponya mall and another at the Black Chain shopping centre in Diepkloof,” Mothiba explained previously.
