Female science and tech writers shine at Profile Awards

Women are clearly making a strong mark in the South African science and technology journalism industry. This was evident at the 14th annual Profile Awards held recently at Wits University.

Katharine Child from The Times won the top prize, with the following women taking the remaining spots in the top four:  Elsabé Brits from Die Burger, Sarah Wild from Mail & Guardian, and Tamar Kahn from Business Day.

“We must especially mention her initiative to go outside the normal boundaries of science writing by going into the laboratory, operating theatre and where scientists work,” said the Profile Awards judges, commenting on Child.

A total of 15 journalist received recognition at the Profile Awards. They are:

The Profile Awards are sponsored by Siemens and organised by the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF), Department of Science and Technology, Wits and the UN Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

“Siemens wants to highlight just how important science journalism is in describing and raising awareness about Africa’s development. Through the Profile Awards programme, the company is developing journalism skills in Africa and promoting quality journalism in newsrooms,” says Clifford Klaas, executive director: HR, government affairs and sustainability at Siemens southern Africa.
