[MAP MONDAY] See the latest crime stats according to where you live

Last Friday, the South African Police Service (SAPS) released the official 2013/14 crime statistics revealing that rape, assault and hijacking have all gone down, while violent crimes such as murder and attempted murder have increased.

To help you filter through the report and easily obtain crime stats in your own town or city, the Insititute for Security Studies'(ISS) Crime Hub  has published an interactive map showing the data from 2004 to 2014 collected from police precincts around the country.

Unfortunately exacts stats for Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal are unavailable due to extensive errors uncovered in the SAPS data for the two provinces.

Find your town or city on the map by either, zooming in, typing it into the search bar or geolocating it. You can view stats for overall or individual crimes under the following categories:

  • Contact crimes
  • Sexual crimes
  • Contact-related crimes
  • Property-related crimes
  • Crime detected as a result of police action
  • Other serious crimes
  • Aggravated robbery
  • Kidnapping
  • Culpable homicide
  • Public violence
  • Ill treatment of children

You’ll also be able to see the difference in numbers throughout the last ten years in the form of a graph.

The map is colour-coded – the more intense the colour is, the higher the crime level in that area. For example, towns and cities in Gauteng are more red (under car hijackings) than the rest of the county.
