[HOW TO] Downgrade from iOS 8 to iOS 7.1.2

Last week saw Apple release the latest version of its mobile operating system iOS 8. And while for many it will provide a new set of features and tools that they can use to improve their day-to-day relationship with their iPhones, there will be (of course) those for whom it is an unhappy alliance from the word go.

Luckily for those of you who are not in love with the iOS 8 way of life you can still downgrade your OS back to the former glory that was iOS 7.1.2… for the time being, that is.

The downgrade works in much the same way that manually updating your iPhone through iTunes does in that you will need to download the full operating system file and then restore your iPhone using it.

The other issue is that Apple will also stop signing the firmware shortly which means that when your iPhone contacts Apple’s servers to find out if it is using a legitimate version of the OS Apple will not respond and the phone will not initialise.

Step 1: Download the iOS 7.1.2 firmware file (IPSW file) for your iPhone, iPod or iPad from here – Make sure you download the correct one for your device

Step 2: Turn off Find My iPhone on your device if you have it enabled – Settings –> iCloud —> turn off Find My iPhone.

Step 3: Connect your iOS device to a Mac or a PC with iTunes installed.

Step 4: Open the iOS device page on iTunes

Step 5: Hold the Option key on a Mac or the Shift key on Windows while clicking the Restore button

Step 6: Find the IPSW firmware file that you downloaded in Step 1, select it, and click Open.

Step 7: A pop-up box will warn you that the restore will delete all data from the device, click the Restore button.

Your newly iOS 7-ed phone will not be able to restore the data from your an iOS 8 backup so if you still have an update from your iOS 7 days then you can use that to get up and running again, otherwise you will be starting from scratch.
