DStv opens up on demand videos to Compact customers

In a fairly obvious fight back against recent video on demand launches in South Africa, Multichoice has added Box Office services to its DStv Compact subscribers. What that means is that anyone on the popular channel bouquet with HD PVR or Explora decoders will now be able to rent and watch the latest movies on demand.

“Demand for the service triggered DStv to make the service available to a broader audience,” Multichoice says in a press release.

Compact customers join DStv Premium and DStv Extra customers who can already get Box Office through their decoders. It’s been the case that anyone with or without a DStv sub can access BoxOffice online for a while now.

If you are a DStv Compact customers you need to have an active subscription to set DStv BoxOffice up, then SMS your smartcard number to 37569 an active subscription and pay the R75 monthly access fee.

Renting a movie will cost you R27 and the first movie is free.Once you’ve rented a movie, you have 48 hours to watch it as many times as you want.

Over the last two weeks, Time Media-backed VIDI and Altech’s NODE have begun offering Netflix-like subscription services to South African  consumers for the first time (legally, at least). You can read our comparison of on demand services over here.
