African travel startup wins first prize at She Leads Africa showcase

Cherae Robinson  beat out nine other women-lead African startups to win the She Leads Africa pitch competition and a R100 000 cash this past week.

Robinson runs a travel startup called Rare Customs, creators of the Tastemakers Africa app, the only app of its kind on the world dedicated to buying upmarket, curated travel experiences on the continent (and officially launching in 2015).

Morocco’s Loue 1 Voiture, an online service that allows users to reserve cars for hire founded by Nour Drissi, took second place and won a R50 000 cash prize, while Thando’s , a Nigerian footwear designing startup run by Taffi Woolward, came in third place and walked away with R10 000 in cash.

Robinson’s prize also consisted of consultation services on brand development from Etisalat’s in-house marketing team, up to a year’s free legal advice, domain name hosting for a year with Africa.com and website design direction from TIAB Design.

Honey Ogundeyi from Nigeria received an honourable mention and R10 000 in funding for her online retail store called Fashpa, which gives Africans access to various fashion and lifestyle brands.

“Dream the things that everyone says are impossible and then work (hard)…to achieve it. It may be cliche but you are the change you want to see in the world. Go out and do it,” Robinson said during her pitch at the competition.
