3DS mod makes it work with the Oculus Rift

When the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset comes out in its final, consumer-friendly form next year, I may never leave my house again. Not when it’ll be possible to play any and every 3DS game ever made in proper 3D via the Oculus Rift via a clever mod, or “hack” if you prefer.

Yes, you read that correctly: 3DS games are playable on the Oculus Rift in glorious in-your-face virtual reality. Engadget says a company that develops capture card modifications for Nintendo’s 3D handheld, KatsuKity, has updated its software to work with the latest Oculus Rift development kit.

Modding your 3DS to work with the capture card involves sending it to Japan to be modded, but the end result is you’ll be able to see everything it puts out on big screens, and via the Oculus Rift if you hook it up to your PC which you totally can. You could also just buy a pre-modded 3DS from them.

Kotaku said in a post earlier this year that the mod cost them around $361, which is a lot of cash (R4 000) and excludes shipping. To get hold of KatsuKity, check out their Google+ page.

I can’t say for sure how the games actually play this way, but I really like the idea of 3DS games on my face and all the depth and immersion that promises. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a huge library of 3DS games to play; Oculus-powered Sonic the Hedgehog, anyone? Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright? Oh yes.

This is just one application of the Oculus Rift, that’s not even considering playing hi-fidelity games like Skyrim, Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous with the headset which will likely swallow me whole for days at a time with the OR strapped to my face.

Roll on, 2015.
