FIFA 15 kicks off with a celeb-captained face-off in Cape Town

FIFA 15, the latest videogame iteration of the world’s favourite soccer franchise came out on Friday, and to kick off local celebrations, MWEB and EA held a bit of a tournament at MWEB’s GameZone in Cape Town.

They invited four local celebrities to captain their favourite teams, who then fought for top honours in a round-robin knockout tournament. Trash-talking rapper Jack Parow, playing as The Netherlands came out on top after defeating Germany, captained by comedian Siv Ngesi in a nail-biting final with a score of 2-0.

The winning team – Parow and his two team mates Alan Meyer (his social media manager and occasional bassist for Van Coke Kartel) and Daniel Buys (A.K.A DJ Sex on Decks) – were rewarded with their very own Xbox One gaming consoles and a copy of FIFA 15 each. The other participant didn’t walk away with Xbox Ones, but they did get copies of FIFA 15 for their preferred gaming platform, so everyone got something.

But you don’t have to take my word for it; MWEB helpfully posted a video of the event online which you can watch below.

This year’s FIFA is out on all platforms, including the Xbox One and PS4, and promises an insane amount of detail in everything from the atmosphere to the stadiums themselves, with over 600 new emotional reactions from players to in-game events as well as improved commentary and crowd chants specific to the club you’re playing as.

Of course, MWEB used the opportunity to punt their internet services as well. Des Kurtz, head of MWEB gaming, said “Gamers need the best possible internet connection – a very fast, stable line with very little input delays. We like to think of them as the connoisseurs of the internet and aim to provide them with a fantastic internet experience.”
