Sony is officially shutting down PlayStation Home

When Sony launched its PlayStation 3 console, it also included a social networking game/app called PlayStation Home. The idea behind it was a semi-Second Life virtual space where gamers created a virtual character and roamed around meeting fellow players. The service is still active however, but not for long.

Sony announced over the weekend that it will stop producing content for the virtual world come November this year, and will officially pull the plug on the whole thing in March next year.

“Due to a shifting landscape, PlayStation Home will cease publishing new content on November 12, 2014. Gamers in the U.S. and Canada will be able to download content until December 3, 2014. As a token of our tremendous gratitude to the community, we will also be releasing a series of free content prior to the platform’s closure on March 31, 2015,” a PlayStation Network senior community manager wrote in a short blog post.

Users could roam around the world, play games with other or even buy their own living space – often to the tune of hundreds of real dollars. The closure has irked some users, who are upset they will lose their progress, and money.

“I heard that HOME is going to close. Is this True? If so, what about all the money we SPENT ?  I SPENT thousands in HOME !!!!!!  I’m sure others did too. I have 2 accounts exclusively for HOME !!!!!  Sony can’t do this to us. HOME is a game & social hub where we meet ppl & make friends & play games & earn rewards & buy personal spaces & LOTS other stuff. PLEASE Joystick_Warrior answer this. I’m VERY upset about HOME CLOSING !!!!!!” wrote online users cekusangel, below the announcement post.

While no further details have been revealed, Sony thanked everybody that has been making use of PlayStation Home for the last six years.

“We would like to thank all of our fans for their support of the PlayStation Home platform over the years. PlayStation Home has been serving the PS3 community since December 2008. During that time, tens of millions of users around the world have grown the social gaming platform into a thriving community of creative and enthusiastic gamers.”
