The 34th annual Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair is back to give some of South Africa’s best student scientists a chance to show off their unique innovations and compete for various prizes.

This year’s Eskom Expo takes place from the 8th to 11th of October at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg, where the minister of science and technology Naledi Pandor is set to attend.

A total of 822 learners from over 31 regions and four countries were chosen at district and regional finals – judges at the Eskom Expo reviewed their research projects in one of 25 categories.

Winners in each category will receive bronze, silver and gold awards as well as prizes such as laptops, mobile science kits, university bursaries, cash and electronic equipment. They will also stand a chance to attend the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in the US.

“The Eskom expo’s primary aim is to encourage the youth of South Africa, and Africa to participate in science, technology, engineering, maths activities in order to promote an interest in these areas with the long-term view to developing scientific skills,” says Eskom.

The public are welcome to attend the Eskom Expo to view projects and show support to participants on the 9th of October from 1pm to 7pm.
