[HOW TO] Make Shadow of Mordor even prettier on PC

Earlier we alluded to the High Definition texture pack for the PC version of Shadow of Mordor; here’s how to go about installing it.

First, you’re going to want to check if it’s already installed or not. Open up Steam, click Library and find the game. Right-click on it and choose “View Downloadable Content” – this is where you should see “Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor – HD Content” if the texture pack is installed; if you don’t see it there, you’re going to need to grab it.

Fortunately that’s very easy. Browse to the game’s Steam Store page, find the texture pack under the Downloadable Content section, click on it, then click the Download button that appears on the next page. A 3.7GB download later – which should take between 2.5 and 3 hours on a 4 mbps ADSL connection to complete – and you’ll almost be ready to go.

Now all you need to do is fire up the game and set the textures to Ultra, and voila, you’ll see far more details on just about everything if you look closely enough. To its credit, Shadow of Mordor is already a very pretty game without the HD texture pack, it’s just that much prettier with it.

Lots and lots of VRAM required

Be warned, though, that running Shadow of Mordor on Ultra with the HD texture pack installed requires a video card with a lot of VRAM. Should you have less than the recommended 6GB – and who does – you may experience frame rate drops as your rig switches to system memory when it inevitably runs out of VRAM.

Still, it’s these sorts of touches that make me very happy to see a PC game letting PC gamers take full advantage of the hardware superiority they enjoy over consoles. Not that I’m dissing consoles, mind – they’re absolutely fantastic for their put-in-and-play approach to gaming and their graphics have come a long way – but I’m still quite pleased my favourite platform is getting a bit more love from developers these days.

Playing the game on PC? Trying out the HD textures? Let us know how it goes.
