Share your passion for science and win R10K in SAASTA young scientists competition

The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) is calling on all young scientists and researchers to express their passion for science by showing its relevance to everyday society by entering the 2014 Young Science Communicators’ Competition.

Through the YSCC, entrants between the ages of 18 and 35 can convey messages and stories about their field of science they work or study in to then larger South African community.

“Scientists are by nature passionate people. This can be reflected in the way stories are told and communicated. You, the scientist, can engage and excite your community about your science,” says SAASTA on its website.

Entries can be submitted in the form of and will be judged under the following four categories:

  • A newspaper or magazine article of up to 700 words
  • A 800-1000 word radio script
  • A MPEG video
  • Open category including other forms of communication such as drama, songs, dance and poetry up to 10 minutes long

Winners of the YSCC stand to win an amazing prizing comprising of the following:

  • A trip to an international science communication conference or workshop for the overall winner
  • R10 000 to the winner and R5 000 to the runner-up of each category
  • R5 000 for the best communication piece in line with the theme of the International Year of Crystallography
  • Top articles will be published in print media, and winners will receive exposure to print media production
  • Top scripts will be produced and broadcast through selected radio stations, and winners will receive radio production and broadcast exposure
  • Top viral video will be promoted through a viral video campaign
  • A People’s Choice Award voted for on Facebook will be awarded based on public voting through  social media for the top entries selected by the judges.

Last year, Dr Leon Van Eck from the Department of Genetics at University of Stellenbosch was crowned the overall winner for his article titled “Jungle Fever: Brazil Nuts, Bees and Orchids”
