Last month, Scotland went to the polls to vote on whether or not it should be become independent of the United Kingdom, with the majority of Scots voting against it. Sixty other countries including South Africa have, however, gained independence from Britain since 1776 all the way up to the late 80s. The map below by Global Post shows each country and the year it gained its independence.
The first to gain independence was the US in 1776, while Brunei followed suit over a century later in 1984.
According to the map, South Africa got its independence in 1931, but other sources differ with some recording 1934, and others 1961.
