Two weeks’ free Deezer music streaming for all Vodacom data subscribers

Music streaming services have really started to take off in South Africa, with services like Simfy Africa and Rara being offered through a number of channels. Where mobile operator MTN partnered with Simfy Africa to bring the service to its customers at a discount rate, Vodacom announced this morning that it too has signed a deal with a music streaming service – Deezer.

In the exclusive partnership, Vodacom will be giving its active data users one month’s free subscription to Deezer’s Premium+ service, which is about 35 million songs, from 9th October.

“With Deezer’s mix of local and international artists we’re changing the way that South Africans experience music. The real benefit behind the Deezer service is its ease of use. By simply registering and downloading the Deezer app, one has immediate access to South Africa’s largest digital music library. Importantly, music can be streamed over multiple devices – no more side loading or fiddling around with album covers,” said Phil Patel, Vodacom’s Chief Commercial Officer, in a media statement.

But users won’t automatically have access to the service, as they need to register first to activate it. Vodacom explained that you need to access http://live.vodafone.com/deezer and register for the service. From there you need to download the Deezer app and login.

As pointed out, Vodacom’s generosity here is limited: the Premium+ subscription is only valid for the first month, and you will have to manually cancel it you don’t want to continue, or you will be charged R60 a month to carry on using the service. If you’re not with Vodacom, Deezer already offers a 15-day free trial of Premium+ anyway.
