Lenovo is still the number one PC maker in the world

Just over a year ago Lenovo surprised the world almost no-one by moving into the top spot when it came to PC sales and manufacture – a spot that it has managed to retain for six consecutive quarters, including the last quarter. According to figures released by IDC last night, one in five PCs now sold are made by the Chinese giant.

“While others have been looking for a game plan that works, we have been executing ours and the results speak for themselves.  Not only have we reached another record high and solidified our PC leadership position for the 6th straight quarter, but we have diversified our business at the same time,” Lenovo said in a media statement.

At the moment, Lenovo is the top PC maker, second in the world when it comes to the tablet PC segment, and third in global tablet sales. It is hoping to add third in smartphone sales to the list in the near future as well.

In August the company announce that profits for the three months that ended in June was $214 million, which is a 23% increase from the previous $174 million in same period last year.

Lenovo has always had a growth plan for South Africa in particular, as Liu Jun, Lenovo’s executive vice president and president of Lenovo’s mobile business group explained to htxt.africa in May.

“We will build a firmer plan for South Africa after we’ve officially closed the deal with Motorola, but our current thinking is that we will leverage the Motorola brand when we enter that market,” he said.

That is still Lenovo’s global plan, as it explains in the press statement that the Motorola deal with simply add another revenue stream.

“We are consistent and clear with our strategy, which with the close of the System X deal and soon to be completed Motorola Mobility acquisition, will give us 3 growth engines – PC, Mobile and Enterprise.  And with the right balance of innovation and efficiency we will launch even more exciting PC, mobile, enterprise and ecosystem products in the near future and the long term.”
