The Origins are yours: Dragon Age RPG available to download for free

In the run-up to Dragon Age: Inquisition’s launch on the 21st of November, Electronic Arts is giving away the game that started it all for free.

That’s right, Dragon Age: Origins for PC has been added to Electronic Arts’ “On the House” programme, and to play it all you have to do is download Origin, sign up for an account and claim it. Once that’s done the game is yours forevermore, just be sure to grab it sooner rather than later as the offer expires on the 14th of October.

If you haven’t played it yet, do yourself a favour and give it a go as Dragon Age: Origins was one of the very best post-Neverwinter Nights 2 role-playing games to come out. It has a riveting story, memorable characters and tons of tactical options, and despite being five years old it looks really good even by today’s standards.

It’s also a party-based RPG, meaning you get to run around with a total of five characters taking on beasts, monsters (including dragons!) and various baddies, giving you plenty of tactical options according to the mix of classes you choose to surround yourself with.

I highly recommend a first playthrough with your main character as a Warrior and a second with him or her as a Mage, as while Mages become incredibly powerful over time and are a lot of fun to play, they’re a bit weak at the start and playing as a Warrior will acquaint you with the game’s systems without a steep learning curve.

The story and combat system along with the well-written dialogue and personality-based interactions between party members are what made the game so memorable for me, so I can’t recommend it enough to anyone who hasn’t yet played.

EA’s official statement (linked above) says you don’t need to have played Origins or Dragon Age 2 to appreciate the third game, but it will acquaint you with the world’s background and lore, which may help you appreciate Inquisition’s nuances just that much more.

It doesn’t hurt that doing this drums up some enthusiasm for Dragon Age: Inquisition, which EA’s preview videos have me hoping will be be as amazing as it looks.
