Bitcoin to be accepted over the counter in South Africa

Pocket full of Bitcoins and nothing to spend them on? Don’t worry, two South African companies have teamed up to bring cryptocurrency to the cashier with point-of-sale support for Bitcoins.

The companies involved are international payments company BitPay and South African outfits Wallettec and Bitcoin Payments. The latter produces software plugins for accepting Bitcoins at online shopping checkouts, while Wallettec specialises in point of sale readers and technology.

One half of Shopzilla, Takealot, already accepts Bitcoins. We’ll be following up with Bitcoin Payments to find out where the first physical point-of-sale installation will be next week.
