Vodacom launches new R1 000 3G tablet with astonishing contract options

Mobile operator Vodacom has a new addition to its portfolio of products – and we’re not talking about the iPhone 6. This is far more exciting. It’s dubbed the Vodafone Smart Tab 3G, and is a 7 inch Android tablet that costs just R999.

The Smart Tab 3G joins the Smart 4 Mini, the Smart Kicka and Smart 4 Power LTE smartphones that Vodacom already sells in South Africa, which are all aimed at reducing the price in their respective categories.

The Smart Tab 3G runs on the latest version of the Android operating system, namely Android 4.4, and is powered by a  1.3GHz dual core processor from Mediatek along with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of microUSB expandable storage (up to 32GB). The 7 inch display is 960×540 which translates into a 157 pixel per inch pixel density. There is a 2MP rear-facing and a VGA front-facing camera  and a 2 840mAh battery to ensure that everything keeps powered.

The Smart Tab 3G officially launches tomorrow and will cost R999 cash and comes with 100MB of data for the first three months. Alternatively you can grab it on one of the four 24 month post-paid contract offers which all come bundled with inclusive data:

  • R59 a month with 500MB of data a month
  • R89 a month with 1GB of data a month
  • R119 a month with 2GB of data a month
  • R158.99 a month with 3GB of data a month

Given that half a gigabyte of data from Vodacom will set you back R99, astonishingly that makes buying this tablet and its accompanying data package R40 cheaper than buying just the data for any other device.

We’ve got a Vodafone Smart Tab 3G in the office to review and will keep you updated on how it stands up to our testing.
