Mark Zuckerberg to donate R210 million to help fight ebola

Following in the footsteps of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation’ generous donation towards the fight against ebola, Mark Zuckerberg has announced that he and his wife Priscilla Chan, will contribute $25 million (around R210 million) towards to cause.

The money will go to the Centers for Disease Control Foundation, which provides assistance and supplies, which enable CDC staff to respond quickly to changing circumstances and needs.

“We need to get ebola under control in the near term so that it doesn’t spread further and become a long term global health crisis that we end up fighting for decades at large scale, like HIV or polio,” Zuckerberg explained on his Facebook page. “We believe our grant is the quickest way to empower the CDC and the experts in this field to prevent this outcome.”

According the World Health Organisation (WHO), ebola has has infected 8 914 people since the first reported case in March this year with 4 447 people having died from the disease.

“We are hopeful this will help save lives and get this outbreak under control,” Zuckerberg said.
